Extending our work in Carlisle southwards from the Greenmarket and Castle Street, the Market Square and the new war memorial area completes a 6000m2 civic regeneration scheme to inject new life into the public realm across the city centre and the main shopping area. The war memorial was relocated from a corner of the Greenmarket to a much more prominent position in alignment with the city’s historic Market Cross and town hall within the square. A new plinth was set under the original memorial in matching stone to house two Victoria Cross plaques in positions elevated up from their previous location within the pavement. A mix of granite and porphyry paving creates a characterful floorscape for the square and memorial area, with a market aesthetic commensurate with the historic shop elevations. Contemporary furniture has been introduced in sympathy with the architecture and additional tree planting in December 2025 will frame the war memorial and create a boulevard along the square’s western edge. New engraved paving around the Market Cross denotes the endpoint of the world famous Cumbria Way walking route.
