Natural Dimensions developed designs for a key urban pocket park from concept to technical design in the centre of Barrow-in-Furness.

Barrow was responsible for producing globally acclaimed naval vessels and ocean liners in the past and today, the BAE Systems shipyard remains a key employer. The design of the Barrow Pocket Park was part of a strategic revitalisation of the town centre to attract a wider range of users and create an attractive urban centre environment for the town’s workforce and residents. The park also intended to complement the re-development of the adjacent Forum indoor market .

The pocket park activates a corridor of derelict  space between Dalton Road and Portland Walk creating a green social space for workers and visitors to meet and for families to enjoy the play opportunities. A variety of seating options includes long bench seats, rounded pebble seats and grass terraces which add visual interest and a variety of seating opportunities. We also proposed a variety of plant types and mixes to adapt the planting palette to the site requirements,  support biodiversity and create a visual envelope within the corridor.

The design also includes a space for events, where a stage can be set up for outdoor performances. Play space surfacing is patterned after sea waves and sandy beaches taking inspiration from the estuary so close to the site.  An arts trail and a poetry panel also provided insights and reflections on  the history of the town. Due to a change in the town development strategy, this project did not progress to construction but we hope the aspirations of the design influence the future development in Barrow.
